Backup and Restore

The Backup and Restore feature provides a way to manually create and restore snapshots of the Manager appliance. Access the Backup & Restore page by selecting Administration ‣ Backup and restore in the main Manager menu.

Performing a Manager backup

Clicking the Generate backup button creates a backup file of the Manager. Backup files contain Central Configuration settings, user accounts on the Manager, a database of connected appliances and all of their configuration files, appliance groups, and synchronized YARA rules.

After the backup file is generated, it is listed under Backup archive:, along with a timestamp and a download button. The Manager preserves only the latest backup file, so it’s recommended to store the backup files outside of the appliance.

Backup files are signed to prevent tampering.

Restoring the Manager from a backup

If a backup file already exists on the Manager, it will be listed under Select backup archive:. Otherwise, only the Choose File radio button is available, allowing the users to select a previously downloaded backup file.

When the restore file is selected, the Restore button becomes available. After clicking the button and confirming the restore, it will take around half a minute to restore settings and the database from the backup file.

Successfully restoring a backup file will overwrite all existing configurations and database entries on the Manager.

If the restore action fails, it can be for one of the following reasons:

  • Unsupported backup version - The backup file was created by an obsolete Manager version. ReversingLabs will try to maintain the backward compatibility of backup files for as long as possible.

  • Invalid signature - The backup file has been tampered with. For security reasons, the Manager will not restore backup files that don’t match their file signature.

Important!

Restoring the same backup to multiple Managers is not supported. It can lead to misconfigurations and conflicts.
